Last Sunday, I was privileged to attend Women Techmakers Cagayan de Oro City’s International Women’s Day Event Celebration ~ Connect. Create. Celebrate. held at Marianne Suites.
Women Techmakers is Google’s global program and brand for women in technology. This community is composed of women Googlers who are passionate about empowering other women in technology through increased visibility, community, and resources.
The event was opened by Ms. Josan Astrid Dometita, GDG (Google Developers Group) Cagayan de Oro Community Manager, who herself is a coder by day and designer by heart. She found her love in technology when she was in college.
Among the speakers that day, Engr. Aisa Mijeno is one of them. She is the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of SALT.PH, a company that produces a sustainable and cost effective ecologically designed lamp powered by “tap water” and “table salt.” Yup, you heard me right, tap water and table salt, awesome right?
Engr. Mijeno shared how she came upon this project and how they plan to reach-out communities with no electricity. They want that these communities will be able to benefit from these sustainable and cost effective ecologically designed lamps.
The next speaker was Ms. Shay Ramos. She is the President of Robogals CDO, a community that aims to increase female participation in engineering, science and technology. She shared about Robogals as an international organization, what their goals are and what they have done locally. They also shared to us their future events.
Nowadays, many women are into engineering, science and technology; though not that much, but still greater in participation compared to decades ago. I have seen a lot of women now being empowered to do things they want and not being hindered because of their gender.
Though I have to leave early due to a prior engagement, I am so happy that I have attended the event. I felt so empowered. It was very beneficial to me and I am looking forward to attend future events with Women Techmakers CDO!
