Practical Steps to Keep Your Blogs Safe and Secure

We keep on hearing that we should keep our digital properties safe and secured, but time and time again, we see a lot of hacking and compromising. The usual cause – something we could easily avoid! When we become complacent, this is where things can go out of hand.

To avoid headaches and frustrations, here are some practical tips to keep your blogs (and any other digital properties) safe and secure:

  1. PASSWORDS. Keep your passwords long and secure. Don’t use the same password in all of your blogs and digital properties (bank account access, social media accounts, etc.). Don’t put them on notebooks that you usually bring around with you. Keep it safe where you are the only one who has access to it.
  2. UPDATE. If you are using WordPress like me, make sure you are using the updated version. They have version updates, not to inconvenience us or for aesthetical reasons, but most of the time, they want to make our blogs secure and without loopholes that hackers can get into. Not only with the latest version of WordPress but also your themes and plugins.
  3. SSL. Getting an SSL certificate is essential. It is to keep your data secure (encryption), verify ownership of your website (authentication), prevent attackers from creating a fake version of your blog, and gain your audience’s trust (HTTPS). You can buy this and sometimes hosting companies offer this for free.

There are many ways to keep our blogs (website) safe and secure. Be equipped with cybersecurity know-how to rise above a crisis, make informed decisions, and win the war against cyber threats. DECODE 2021 will be on November 10-11.
